Friday Market - Shuk HaShishi:
The Ma'ayan HaRadum Awakens June 4!
Shuk HaShishi ( "Friday Market") is the Tzfat version of a grass-roots community market and gathering place for families, artists, musicians and local entrepreneurs and will take place starting June 4. The purpose of this market is to answer Safed's community's unmet economic and cultural needs. All it takes to make it happen is initiative.
The Shuk HaShishi is modeled after the ShikShuk in Pardes Hanna, a spontaneous community happening first put together by local residents in 1999. Ever since, the ShikShuk phenomenon has become a growing trend in cities throughout Israel. ShikShuk is a neighborhood event expressing community spirit and awareness of the common weal. ShikShuk fosters creativity, generates livelihood, promotes artists and musicians, encourages local cottage industry and attracts visitors. The home-made goods on offer are ecologically friendly, enriching the body, soul, and environment.
And It Begins
The Khan of the White Donkey and Halevav - The Center for Healthy Living in Tzfat - have taken up the challenge. We are happy to announce that starting June 4, a monthly market will take place on the first Friday of every secular month at the Ma'ayan HaRadum, in the Artists' Quarter. The "sleepy spring" will come to life in a diverse, magical event by and for residents of Tzfat and the surrounding area. (In July the shuk will take place after Tisha B'Av on the last Friday, July 30, resuming again the first Friday in August.)
How can you participate? Just show up at Shuk HaShishi with a straw mat plus any usable goods you no longer need, and sell them for a nominal sum (no fee for children's stands, second-hand wares). Please note that Shuk HaShishi is a people's market, not a for-profit enterprise. Commercial products, packaged food that is not home-made, and environmentally unfriendly products may not be sold.
Booths for new wares and takeaway food will be charged a participation fee of 10% of the day's revenues. Participants must coordinate in advance with Halevav/Khan of the White Donkey staff. Musicians, artists, and workshop facilitators are welcome to contact us and take part. Volunteers to help organize the event are warmly encouraged.
When And Where?
June 4, 2010 / 22 Sivan, 5770, from 10 am until 90 minutes before Shabbat, at the Ma'ayan HaRadum, Artists Quarter, Tzfat.
All are welcome!
Blessings,
The Team at Halevav and the Khan of the White Donkey
