Izidora Café And Yakobson Art Gallery
For a two in one experience why not go to the Izidora Café and Art Gallery at 22 Tet Vat Street. Tucked in at the side of the Hama'ayan HaRadum Square, just opposite the Khan of the White Donkey, is this delightful new café and art gallery.
With its lovely courtyard seating 15 outside, and beautiful interior with space for 20 upstairs, this is a great place to enjoy tea and cakes.
The Café: Dairy
The Teas
One of the few places in town that offers leaf teas in proper teapots and for the same price (10shks) as you get a teabag elsewhere! With a good selection of flavors and infusions including Earl Grey and various fruit teas, you will feel totally spoilt drinking out of the delicate china, especially if you accompany it with a slice of cake!
Of course they also have good choicez of coffee if you prefer (from 8shks).
The Cakes
With a lovely selection of home-made cakes and pastries (25shks) you will find it hard to decide. Do you have the apple pie or the apple strudel; the chocolate cake or the poppy seed pie; the cheesecake or the cheese blintzes? The best thing is of course to go with a friend and then you can have both and share!
Snacks And Meals
If you want something more substantial why not choose the tasty mushroom soup (20shks) followed by a toasted sandwich or bagel (from 30shks). The quiche, mushroom or broccoli, served with salad is also excellent (40shks). If you want to justify having your cake you can always choose one of the freshly made salads for lunch (40shks). Dora, the cook who is also one of the two proprietors, serves an excellent Israeli breakfast (50shks) which includes humus, tehina and salads as well as your choice of eggs.
Dora, who lives in nearby Amuka, always wanted her own restaurant. She recently decided to follow in her daughter's footsteps and open her own café in the Artists Quarter. This is no mean feat as her daughter runs the excellent Gan Eden restaurant in Canaan. If you visit both restaurants you can certainly see that they influence each other not only in décor but also in the food and the presentation.
The Gallery
While you eat you can rest your eyes on the paintings on the walls or look at artist Aharon Yakobson, painting away in the corner.
Aharon comes from Tbilisi, Georgia and settled in Safed in 1993.
Before making aliyah, Aharon graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in his native Tbilisi. He has exhibited all over Europe and the United States, and his work can be found in both galleries and private collections.
When he is working in the gallery it is a privilege. You see a real artist at work. You can see exactly how he brings a painting to life - his use of vivid color and the way he wields his brush gives you a glimpse into his artistic mind. The resulting warm, colorful pictures are easy on the eye and add to the restful atmosphere of the café. Should you take a fancy to one of the prints or paintings and want to take one home as a souvenir, Aharon, Izi - the other partner in the café, or Dora herself, will be happy to help you.
