Tzfat's Eco-Green Guest House
Eco-Travel in Tzfat
What does the ecologically-correct visitor do when deciding on a visit to Tzfat? How does one manage to enjoy a visit to the magical and mystical city of Tzfat, with its religious, historical and cultural sites and Kabbalistic traditions, while maintaining one's adherence to the principles of environmental responsibility?
One possibility is Tzfat's Green House. Nestled in a quiet corner of Tzfat's Artists Quarter, the Green House offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy their visit secure in the knowledge that their accommodations are carefully maintaining a high level of ecological awareness and environmental responsibility.
The Green House is a comfortable guest room for up to 4 guests. The unit has 2 rooms, one with a big double bed and the second with 2 single beds. A fridge and coffee corner make it easy to prepare simple meals and snacks, and Shabbat amenities are available for guests to use to heat food and water for Shabbat.
The Green House is located in the center of the town, an easy 5-minute walk to the main commercial district of Jerusalem Street, and 5-minute walk in the other direction to the religious sites of the Old Jewish Quarter.
Creating an Eco-Friendly Guest House
When the Green House was built, one of the first considerations was how to best insulate it. As a result of this foresight, the Green House is presently extremely well insulated, making winter heating and summer cooling quite easy. The room has energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, so whatever heating adjustments are needed are readily available.
The plumbing in the Green House was installed with foresight towards saving water, and the garden outside is watered with recycled "grey water". In addition, a mulch pile in the corner of the yard allows guests to compost their vegetable peelings, egg shells, and other organic matter. The yard is shaded and has tables and chairs for guests to sit while relaxing outside under the trees.
Finally, guests can be comfortable in the knowledge that any plastic or paper matter that is left over after their visit is recycled in local recycle bins which are located nearby.
In addition to the tortoises, woodpeckers and an occasional owl which can be found in the courtyard, the Green House's garden also hosts two dogs, family pets of the Green House's host family. These dogs are quite sweet and gentle, but Laurie, the proprietor of the Green house, notes that guests who are allergic or apprehensive should be aware of their presence.
